Decide what you want from Portchester Castle before planning the rest of the day. A picnic, a ground-level look around and a climb up the keep place different demands on a group. Start with the person who needs the easiest route, then work out which parts everyone wants to do together.
Ground-floor access is different from access to the whole keep
English Heritage describes ramp access to the ground floor of the keep and its exhibition, but no wheelchair access above ground level and no lift. Its access information also identifies compacted gravel paths, grass and uneven historic surfaces. The stairs include steep, narrow and winding sections, with stone and wooden steps that can become slippery when wet.
For someone avoiding stairs, plan the visit around the accessible ground-level areas rather than promising a climb. If a particular surface or transfer is important to your visit, contact the site with that specific question. A general accessibility label cannot tell you whether a route suits your own chair, balance or stamina.
Parking and toilets need a little planning
The facilities page places paid parking about 200 metres from the entrance and says it is managed separately from English Heritage. It lists no toilets within the castle site, directing visitors to the large car park outside the walls. Build a toilet stop into your arrival, particularly with children, and check current parking charges and public toilet opening before travelling.
Bring lunch, and keep it simple
English Heritage allows picnicking in the outer bailey and lists picnic benches and grass in the inner bailey. Barbecues, tents and gazebos are not permitted. A small range of snacks and hot and cold drinks is sold on site. Dogs are welcome on leads.
A packed lunch gives you flexibility, but choose a weather forecast that suits an outdoor break. Keep your plan modest if members of the group want different things: agree where to meet after a climb rather than assuming everyone will take the same route.
